But getting that perfect job and making your mark at your next gig isn’t as simple as sending in a resume and praying they call you back – You need to stand out from the crowd and show hiring managers why you’re their perfect candidate with everything from your CV and cover letter to your interview answers. Know what you’re looking for in your next role.
If you’re doing this right, you won’t just be applying for any old job. Instead, you’ll be looking for a specific type of role at a specific type of company. You can even think of this as curating your dream job by choosing what you want and leaving out everything else.
What do you want from your next job? Depending on your current situation and goals, you may have certain criteria in mind. What kind of company would you like to work for? What kind of role do you want? How much do you want to earn? What city do you want to live in? What is the company culture like? Do you want to be managing people, managing projects, or working with customers? Do you want to be growing in your career, making a difference at work, or learning new skills?
Don’t respond to ads you don’t care about.
We get it — applying for jobs is a numbers game. If you send enough applications, someone will call you back. However, you need to be particularly careful when applying for jobs you don’t actually want. Not only could it hurt your reputation, but it will also waste your time and theirs. Instead, focus on applying for the jobs that you really want, rather than sending out applications left and right without any purpose.
This will save you both time and effort, as well as increase your chances of getting a call back. You also won’t feel as bad if you don’t get the job. After all, it wasn’t the job for you.
Check the company out before you interview.
After you’ve found a few jobs you really want, you should do some research to find out as much as you can about the company. What do they do? Who are they? What do they stand for? What are their values? Why is this job posted? What skills and experience do they look for in candidates?
You should also search for the company and its senior managers on social media platforms like Twitter and Instagram, as well as review the company’s website. This will help you get a feel for the company culture and whether this would be a good fit for you.
This research will give you an idea of what the company is like and help you prepare for the interview questions.
